What are You Thankful For?

As today is Thanksgiving, I am reminded of all that I have to be grateful for. I have truly had a blessed life…a wonderful family, fabulous interesting friends, a great career traveling the world and studying other cultures.  I live in a country where I am free to vote and practice whatever religion I prefer.  I can speak out about whatever I choose to speak about.

I truly learned to appreciate all of this when I lived in South Africa during apartheid and witnessed the lack of freedoms and rights of many people…rights that we Americans often take for granted.

One year when I was in South Africa a friend attempted to make a traditional dinner for me and I so loved her for doing it. I was a long way from home and my family and she made the day really special.  It wasn’t anything like what we make, but it was really good.  As they don’t get turkey in the markets until Christmas, we had Cornish game hens. Since they don’t have real pumpkin like ours, they call their squash “pumpkin” so she made a pumpkin pie from squash and put chocolate sprinkles on top.  It certainly had an unusual flavor.

Another year, I had dinner with some other friends who heated the cranberry sauce and poured it over vanilla ice cream for dessert.  That was a real surprise to me, but actually it tasted quite good.

My most memorable Thanksgiving was the year I was speaking in Dubai for the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and my client actually had a turkey flown in so he and his family could make Thanksgiving dinner for me.  They invited all the Americans they knew and we all cooked and enjoyed dinner together.

It’s times like these when I realize that people around the world are people who are just like us…who want to have peace, happiness, and the love of their families and friends.  This year, I am thankful for my health, for overcoming cancer, and for still being able to speak, write and touch people’s lives in a positive way.

You Have to Slow Down to Speed Up!

You Have to Slow Down to Speed Up

Today is the start of the second half of the year. I am sitting here early on a Sunday morning with a cup of steaming hot coffee considering that today marks the ending of the first half of 2018 and the start of the next.

You are probably like me and spend most of your time working…doing…creating your life. However, sometimes we need to look back and be honest with ourselves so we can move forward.

In other words, you have to slow down to speed up.
Are you where you want to be in 2018? You likely have accomplished some of your goals and still, have more to do. Same for me.
Here is a simple exercise if you want to evaluate yourself.
1. Look at the numbers.
Can you quantify what has happened in your life and business to show how far you have come? List out your accomplishments. Be careful not to forget the ones that were easy for you, but come as a struggle for others. List out your income, profit, skills gained, weight and your PR in health. Don’t rush this as it is helpful to see have far you have come.
2. Write about your experiences.

What experiences stand out for you? What struggles did you overcome? What moments made you proud?

3. Get clear on the next six months.
What do you want from the next six months? To lose weight…more profit…2 weeks off to travel…write your book (the one you have been talking about). List all the things you want.
4. Find your one thing.

Which of these is most important to you? Can you narrow it down to one thing? Can you identify the one goal or experience that means the most to you? You have other goals and other experiences, but can you determine what is MOST important to you for the second half of the year?

Ok with this, you have something that excites you and inspires you to live a bigger life. It can also be scary too.

What to do next?

I know for sure that to create something new that you have to create new paths to get there. You have to let go of the old to create a new way of being.  If you share with me your ONE thing, I will send you a free tool to ensure that you make it. This is not a sales strategy or some other manipulation. It is a simple way to align yourself with your “one thing.” All you have to do is reply here and tell me what you want in your life in 2018.

Here is you…and your next six months. Let’s create something that inspires you for the inside.
You are awesome!

“Thank” Your Way Through It- by Guest Blogger Lucy Wellmaker

Thank Your WayBy now, many of us know the benefits of being thankful and having an attitude of gratitude. Studies show that being grateful is linked to increased satisfaction, motivation and energy. Practicing gratitude involves finding and noticing things in our lives for which we are grateful.

While I am a big fan of a being grateful, I’d like to share a concept that is similar but very different. What I am suggesting here is that we give thanks for things for which we do not necessarily feel grateful.

One of my favorite movies is “Facing the Giants”. In it, a losing high school football coach tells his underdog team that they will do their best in all areas of their lives and whether they win or lose they are going to give thanks and praise.

Why would any coach want to give thanks and praise after losing a game? Maybe, because it works?

They didn’t stop at giving thanks. Giving thanks actually inspired and motivated them to do what they needed to do to change their situation. They faced their fears.

The coach pushed them even more and the team worked even harder to get what they wanted. In the end, when it really mattered, they won.

I know it’s just a movie, but I have seen this play out in my own life as well.

I am generally a naturally positive person. I see the glass half full. I look on the bright side of things. I don’t try to be this way, I just am.

So when I found myself making a list of things that made me angry and resentful I knew I needed to do something about it. Rather than shifting my attention to the good things going on in my life, I stayed focused on this list.

As I read each item on the list, I said “Thank you.” I did not feel thankful, nor did I have a reason to be thankful. I just said “Thank you”.

I was amazed at how quickly my mood shifted. I felt like I had discovered a miracle cure.

What I realized later was that I was tapping into something I know to be true. That is, that all things work for good even when we don’t understand them. It is when we trust this concept and just say “thank you” that we align ourselves with a powerful force that will get us through our seemingly negative situation.

Saying “thank you” doesn’t mean we become complacent and accept our situations as they are. It’s about acknowledging our situations as they are now, facing our fears and trusting that there is a reason that is somehow, someway in our best interest.

The change of heart that can be experienced by doing this is amazing! It really is a miracle.

It will fill you up and provide the inspiration needed to move you forward. In order for this strategy to work successfully, one must believe and have faith in it.

I invite you to give it a try.  Share your comments and let us know how it worked for you.

Give thanks and be well,

Lucy Wellmaker

Are You Living Thankful All Year Long?

livingthankfulWhat does being thankful really mean?  How does it affect our lives and businesses?  Let’s hear about a lady that is the role model of living a life of thankfulness.

Meet Miss Margaret: who in her span of 96 years has seen many changes including the death of her husband and child, and has focused her whole life on being thankful and grateful for it all! She loves God, family, flowers, and serving others. Her large family cherish her as the core of their lives. Enduring strokes, physical pain, and heartache, she lives a life work of serving others and giving thanks.

Seeing the world through a different set of blue eyes, Miss Margaret has chosen not to have a computer, iPhone, or a social media platform!  Her information system is radio, TV, reading books, magazines, newspapers, prayer, and sharing face to face time with others! She dedicates herself to making a difference and is not a complainer but a winner!

Miss Margaret loves being in control of her day, (even though she has to use a walker, and has a nurse nearby)! She answers her own phone, door, and keeps track of her financial statements. Originally from Ohio, she has lived all over the country following her husband’s corporate career; and has a sharp memory and shares the adventures as if they were yesterday!

Recently we visited Miss Margaret taking her flowers and a big balloon! We were greeted at the door with a big hug and kiss. Spending time in her kitchen where she can keep check on the weather and neighborhood by viewing it through her bay window, and hearing about what her family was doing and what they had planned for Thanksgiving made us realize what living thankful is all about! No mention of herself, but focusing on what she wanted to know about our lives and business.

As we left she invited us back and said we still needed to go out for lunch soon! Getting into our car, we had just been given a dose of hope and joy, which we could take into our lives and share! We had not missed having the TV on, or our iPhones drawn in hand, or the iPad out to show her what she was missing!

Today we received a Thanksgiving card with a hand written note thanking us for the visit, flowers and that awesome balloon!  She reminded us of lunch soon, and how she enjoyed seeing us!

What can we learn from Miss Margaret about having a successful business and life?  It’s all about keeping it personal, real, and focused on the important things. Putting others first and keeping it simple to be able to handle the many needs of life. Miss Margaret knows living a life of thankfulness is one of the reasons she is still here to enjoy each day-do you?

We here at Simply Sue Speaks Global Booking Agency wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving time. We are honored and thankful for the opportunity to “earn your business”  and to match you with the best speakers and individuals in the world.

As we plan a new business year, we will be making thankfulness an important part of our business plan and living life each day, and learning more ways of doing so; how about you?

Are You Stuck? 6 Keys to Moving Forward!

stuckHow many times have you found yourself in situations where you are “stuck” in the moment?  It could be right now! How does it feel? You have hit a snag in your professional or personal life and you are paralyzed and unable to move on!  All you can dwell on is the issue and you can’t “let it go!” It becomes all you think about and you begin to beat yourself up, because it must be your fault somehow! It can make you angry, frustrated, and becomes the controlling factor of your life! You just cannot shake it!

I remember one of my favorite words of wisdom that the late Dr. Wayne Dyer shared was this:stuckwaynedyer

When we hit these rough and challenging times if we let it go far and long enough, they can stop us from reaching our full potential, and eventually cause us to give up and quit and live in the memories of regret!

I don’t want your business or life to ever get to the place where you want to quit or give up, because I have discovered 6 KEYS that will open your mind and heart, show you a direction to get back on track,  and keep you moving forward.

  • Admit to yourself you are “stuck!”  Write down what the issue is!
  • Walk away from the situation for a short while and focus on something else
  • Pray and meditate on the blessings that you are thankful and grateful for-write them down
  • Get some planned exercise- you would be amazed at what an hour of walking or Zumba will do
  • Now you are ready to share with a positive person in your life the real issue and let them help you reach a solution
  • Be thankful you went through this time- now you can prevent it in your future and be able to help someone else through it

We all can get “stuck” at any given time. It can surprise us and challenge us! Now we do not have to give in and let it destroy our joy, peace, and happiness! You are valuable and worth so much more than spending your time being “stuck!”

The “Must-Haves” to Be a Professional Speaker in Today’s World!

speaker of todayI am often asked as a booking agency for professional speakers and a speaker myself; what does a speaker need to have in place to be successful? In response I always ask first, “why do you want to be a professional speaker?”

This is the key to any successful career-knowing the “why” you are are doing what you do! What I learned as a graduate of Dale Carnegie: “you have to love what you do, and be excited about it” has been key in making sure my focus is on the why first! Knowing your “why” gives you vision, meaning and purpose to overcome any obstacle!

Once you know your “why,” it only makes sense that you need to have a well thought out written business plan of how you are going to become the best in your field of expertise.  As a speaker, you are starting a small business with you as the service, and then you can create products as add-ons to what you love and do best-speak!  Your plan needs to include: financial, marketing, operations, systems and processes.

Once you know your why and have your business plan in place;  what do you need whether you are marketing yourself, or others are doing some or all of it for you?  Here are the key things I have found in today’s speaking industry are the “must-haves” in getting the bookings you want and need:
Positive Attitude– Keep in mind, “it’s not about you, it’s all about others!”  Don’t let others disappoint or discourage you!
Be Thankful– Be grateful for the opportunities that come your way and share it with those who invite you to speak, and those who listen
Have and Be Fun– No one wants a “lecturer” anymore! You have to engage and interact with your audience!
Bring Great Content– Audiences of today want content they can use, no canned presentations or sales pitches for your company or books
Website–  Current updated one, that is mobile friendly
One-Sheet– Visual marketing tool available electronically and as a handout
Business Cards– Clear concise message
You Tube clip- Visual of you in action
Target Markets Defined– Know to whom you need to spend your time, resources and efforts in marketing yourself
Social Media Strategy– Electronic communication by which you: share, communicate, connect, and engage with your current audiences, event planners, and future audiences. There are many forms such as: Blogs, Vlogs, Videos, On-Line Communities (over 52 Social Media Platforms to choose from) Podcasts, Texting, Newsletters, E-mail Blasts. Depending on your field of expertise you can find out which ones are best for you
Fee Strategy– These can vary and be negotiated, but I love what speaker Shawnee Duperon shares: “if you don’t value your own work, neither will anyone else!” Practice quoting your fee so you can say it without batting an eye! No apologies!
Good Business Practices– Organization, Customer Relationship Management, and Time Management with systems and processes in place.
Be a Life-Long Learner– Know that education is the key to handle the change that is always a part of being a speaker. You never totally arrive where you cannot learn something from someone, and it keeps your message fresh, relevant, and exciting! Audiences are never the same and you can’t expect them to be! Keep learning to handle any situation with ease and confidence!

Sounds like a lot of work?  I assure you it is! Why do you think Public Speaking is the #1 fear of most people? Not only is it just getting in front of people and speaking, it is everything else that plays a part both before and after that makes you valuable and able to help others! It’s what I call the #WOWfactor.

In the May 2015 issue of Real Simple magazine, Christine K. Jahnke, author of “The Well-Spoken Woman,” reveals 5 tips on “How to conquer your fear of public speaking.” In this valuable article she shares: “for every important speech, I believe every minute you speak requires an hour of preparation.”  She notes this may seem a lot, but for most of us who are speakers, and represent speakers, we know this is so true!

Now you know what it takes behind the scenes to be the speaker that everyone will be talking and remembering long after your presentation, and how to make others feel like a “Rock Star” for choosing or referring you to speak!  I wish you well on your journey!

Weekly #WOWfactor- Oops- Wrong Color!

badhairdayI know white or grey are not my fashion colors, and that goes for hair too!  I choose to do my own color, and have always made it work; till this week!  I went to buy my favorite brand and they were out of my shade!  But another brand I hadn’t used before had the same shade and looked the same on the box, so off I went! What a mistake! I ended up not with auburn hair, but orange! I know for some it could look great, but not on me!  So I had to meet clients with orange hair till I could get it back to normal!

Does that ever happen in your business? You have a plan, and you have goals to meet the plan, but something or someone blocks your way and you choose to take a another path that doesn’t  turn out well! What do you do? Give up and say it will never be the same again and quit? Or do you go back to your original plan, see what you can learn from taking the wrong path, and begin again with excellence as the focus and complete the journey?

Today I fixed that color! Is it back the same?  Close, but I learned I cannot substitute something else for what is working and listen to others and myself thinking it will turn out with the same results!

I just heard, a large company in our area is changing their management team- it will be the fourth time in six months!  Looks like they have made an Oops! and got the wrong color, and still haven’t been able to learn from it!

Hope today on this Thankful Thursday that you know how to learn from your Oops! and begin again on your journey to success!
