Motivational Speakers All Fluff and Rah-Rah?  Not Kelly Swanson! Here is how she feels about what she does and offers to you her next audience:

Motivational speaker at Indy womens health eventI hear people call motivational speakers fluff and rah-rah. Yet I find the number of groups looking for motivational speakers to be staggering.

As a result, I just wanted to take this moment to address what I mean when I call myself a motivational speaker or inspirational speaker. I can’t speak for the others out there – you’ll just have to ask them what it means to them. And then hope they mean it.

Motivational Speaker – One who teaches the art and science of self-discipline – and the techniques, attitudes, and behaviors that can be applied to any challenge.  While other speakers teach sales techniques, communication skills, more strategies for success, tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle, etc…

– a motivational speaker teaches and inspires you to:

  • Take new information and put it into action
  • Stay excited about the goal at hand

So, no, not every speaker is automatically a motivational speaker, unless they:

  • Actively work at teaching your audience how to change attitudes and behaviors
  • Actually encourage you and show you that you can do the things you want to do

As a result, you walk out feeling on top of the world – not about the job they did – but about the job you now want to do. The true test of a motivational speaker is whether they walk their talk, and whether the audience evaluations state that they were motivated and inspired – over and over and over and over.

The best motivational speakers SHOW the message instead of TELL the message. And that’s where my stories come in. I deliver messages through the characters in Prides Hollow, my fictitious town. My characters do what plain information cannot do. They take the listener to an imaginary place where they have a front row seat to live the message themselves.

And by living the message, the audience also undergoes the change they crave.I would love the opportunity to talk more about how I bring my style of motivation to your audience. I’m not a one-size-fits-all speaker, and I’m not afraid to walk away from a group who will not benefit from what I have to give. Your time, as well as mine, is too valuable to try and shoe horn my message for an audience that is not the right fit.”
