Love Change?

Is it possible to love change and welcome it into our lives?

Recently while attending a company’s annual conference where major technology change was being presented; I knew it was going to be interesting to see how the multi-generations represented would react.

As the changes were announced you could feel the fear, doubt, and tension spread throughout the room!  In looking at their expressions for some it seemed like the end of business as usual and it was overwhelming to see where the company was headed.

A large number of the attendees had been there from the beginning of the company and personally knew the founders; and I could imagine they were wondering: “is this what they would have wanted?”

Then others were excited and easily willing to embrace the changes. They were the ones texting on the hashtag set up,  sharing this would be a great future for everyone!

As the presentation continued I looked around and many were in shock and really didn’t know what to feel or think. They knew change was needed; but were afraid they could not master the skills it would take to succeed in this new world!

This is not new is it? Change is happening all over our workplaces! I know you are either going to be facing it soon, are in the midst of it now, or you have been through it and will probably have to experience it again. This is good, right?

Change is just like anything else we face, isn’t it?  It all starts with our mindset and attitude! That is where change begins and where the progress on our journey is formed!

One of our Remarkable Speakers, Dean Lindsay
shares:  “Change is inevitable, Progress is a choice!”

In looking at the long term journey here are three steps to help you make change easier:

  • Choose to face your change! The longer you put this off the harder it will be to take the next steps to reach progress!
  • Secure all the complete information of what the change entails so that you can overcome the doubt, fear, and the barriers that could stand in your way, if you let them.  This includes asking questions and seeking expert advice to have a complete understanding of how to move to the final step in this process.
  • Make plans and goals of how to successfully handle the changes that are going to move you to success!  These need to be written down and a commitment made to do what it will take to succeed and not just quit and say “I Can’t!”

Can you say with me “I love change?”  The longer you delay saying those words the longer the time it will take you to progress on your journey; as there is no other way to avoid the inevitable!

NONPROFITS, THINK LIKE THE COWS!

A slap in the face on a freezing winter morning from a cold, wet, and smelly cow’s tail: that was my daily greeting from the first of more than 200 cows that needed to be milked.

I worked on my family’s dairy farm through high school and college, but the twice-a-day milking routine never came easy for me. Summers were hot, and winter mornings at 3 a.m. were often below freezing.

The workers stood in a pit that placed the cows at chest level.

It felt like daily combat, with the cows definitely having the advantage. My arms and hands were targets for quick kicks, and my face was the object of nonstop tail swats.

The longtime veterans of the dairy didn’t seem to have the difficulties I did in getting the cows’ cooperation.

One particularly frustrating morning I was given some advice that at the time I laughed at, but I later realized was actually quite profound.

“Hardy, you have to learn to think like the cows if you want their cooperation.”

Organizations seeking to improve relationships with clients, members, board members, volunteers, donors, and sponsors can benefit from this dairy barn wisdom.

It’s easy to make the mistake of assuming we know what others want.

Although I thought that all the cows needed was to be fed and milked, they obviously wanted a different approach to the task at hand.

Often we get so focused on the work to be done, we don’t take the time to better understand either those we help or those who help us. As a result, collaboration and support may be less than desired.

Reduce resistance and increase cooperation by actively soliciting and listening to the opinions of those you are trying to engage.

Whether it’s clients, members, board members, volunteers, donors, or sponsors, who is it you need to think more like?

Are You in the BUT Mode?

How often do you use the word ‘but’…?

It is a powerful word when used occasionally to introduce something contrasting with what has already been mentioned, and, according to author Sean Dsouza, it can also become a defensive excuse for not taking responsibility for what happens in our lives!

Have you ever said “I would love to be living my dream, but I don’t have the money and opportunities others do?”  Or how about this one, “I have applied everywhere, but everyone says I am overqualified?” This one, which is specific to our industry, “I was the perfect speaker for that event, but they don’t pay speakers anymore.”

Or the classic, “I was the best candidate for the job, but I knew they wouldn’t hire me because of my age.”

What messages do these “buts” say about the person proclaiming it, and how are others supposed to react?  Words say what our mindset is feeling, and to keep in this mode is very distracting to others and can become devastation to the success we seek.

Is it possible to have a life with “no buts?”  Want to make a change? Here are some ways to begin:

  1. Recognize that you are being defensive and not taking responsibility for your actions so that the ‘buts’ win, both in your words and life.
  2. Take a look at your mindset and see if you are fixed on the failures or learning from the daily growth experiences that failure brings.
  3. Check out who you associate with. Do they allow the ‘buts’ to take over their mindset and words?
  4. Make a choice and decision to change.

Two words I am working at deleting from my own and others’ conversation and mindset are: ‘try’ instead do or do not,  and ‘but’ instead use and. Will you join me?

Is ‘Rest’ Important in Your Life?

rest-1Merry Christmas everyone, and hope you are having a wonderful holiday season.  As we take time to spend with family and friends living out the true meaning of the holiday, anyone find it hard to actually take time to “REST?”

Why is that? Medical science tells us we are more creative, productive, and will live longer when we value our ‘rest’ time as much as we do the hours we spend at work.

As a CEO of a thriving company, and a person that was brought up to love to work as my identity; resting is a struggle. Anyone else in the same situation?

According to the latest figures I am not alone. We, in America, are working longer work weeks, for longer span of our lifetimes, and feel resting is a luxury we cannot afford.

During this beautiful Christmas season of 2016 and beyond I am making a choice to not be like everyone else.  Can we choose to see the value of rest, and plan how we are going to make it a priority going forward?  This is not a matter of New Years’ ‘resolutions’, it is a priority of health, business success, wellness, and security.

Some tips to consider are:
1.      Find your worth and security that is not based on your work and achievement.
2.      Prioritize better and plan time for rest.
3.      Set definite work hours and quit on time.
4.      Organize your work and work space.
5.      Exercise regularly-no longer using work as an excuse not to do so.
6.      Spend time resting with your family and friends with no guilt.
7.      Spend less time in front of the TV which suggests we need to work more.
8.      Do something every day you love doing that is not related to your work.
9.      Create an easier lifestyle that focuses on the important and not the image of
always having to be working.

Wishing for you and your family, a wonderful Christmas, where you begin making a new way of life, where rest is valued and see how your work life becomes easier and less stressful!

“I heard the bells on Christmas Day, their old familiar carols play, and wild and sweet the Word repeats, of peace on earth goodwill to men.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Have you heard the bells lately?

Do You Always Believe the Best of Every Person?

thoughtspowerDo you allow negative thoughts to feed your feelings about others? Since most of what we hear is not always positive, it is a choice to decide to believe the best and not the worst of every person and situation, isn’t it?

Is this hard to do? In some situations it is easier than others, but we must be on guard to not let the negative thoughts pop up instead of valuing and caring for others! How about when you are driving and others are not as careful as they should be? Does ‘road rage’ automatically set in? Do you ever stop to think about what might be causing the person to drive like they are?

This is an easier one for me to handle, but for some I have seen this rob them of their joy, peace, and concern for others, and whenever they get in their car they expect to see bad driving and it becomes a way of life as to how they let their feelings react to it. Funny thing is, the other driver didn’t even know the impact they had, we let them control our feelings and emotions willingly.  In doing so, we not only robbed ourselves but we also brought others that are around us into the same mindset as well!

What about those that have intentionally hurt your business, family, and others?  This is really pushing the choice of finding and believing the best in a person because we are focused on what they did, not on the why, aren’t we?  I have not always been perfect at handling situations that involve confrontation and not letting my feelings explode! How about you?

However, I have finally realized, thanks to a great book by Joyce Meyer, called “Living Beyond Your Feelings” to truly live a purpose driven life and be successful and happy, I have to have a plan to not let my emotions and feelings run wild, and to face each person and situation looking for and believing the best and not the worse. This also includes seeing and believing the best of yourself too! No more negative talk about yourself, as this is not helping you see and believe the best in others!

Joyce shared, a great way to get in the mindset of thinking this new way is when you feel those emotions and feelings of negativity start to build is to immediately think of things that make you happy. Flip your mind off the negative feelings onto something that changes your attitude and the situation. It won’t take long to see that you would rather live in positive thoughts about others and yourself than live in the negatives. You never know when you start looking for and believing the best in others it not only changes your life, but it could change their life too!

Have a great week believing the best in yourself and every person, and love to hear how it works for you!

Do You Have “T-shaped” Work Skills for the Future?

tshapedOur workplace is changing at a fast pace, but have you heard much about the “hot topic” of becoming a “T-shaped” person?

When you hear “T-shaped” what picture comes to mind first? Does deep and wide pop right away? The recruiting industry has started looking extensively into the skill sets that will be needed in the future workplace. They are finding more and more they need people who can do bigger things and think more broadly. The work of the future needs people who have the depth of expertise and skills represented by the vertical part of the “T”, while the crossbar of the ” T” represents the amount they are willing and able to collaborate and share!

Quite a different look, than our normal way of thinking about our work as an individual isn’t it? “T-shaped” people are well-rounded and versatile. They are able to contribute and take on a variety of roles without being “assigned” them as in the workplace now! This will open new mindsets, and focus on how people will be compensated, promoted, and given development to be able to transform organizations!

The skill sets needed to be a  “T-shaped” person are: adaptable/versatile, communicate effectively, multi-cultural awareness, entrepreneurial, intrapreneurial, team player, problem solver, self-motivated, disciplined, critical thinker, collaborative, service focused, and have a mindset of being your own CEO. Sound like an impossible task to make these changes?  Do they look familiar when reviewing the past success of major companies? What were once the so called “soft skills” are now becoming the “hard skills” that we must have!

Our professional speakers and trainers here at Simply Sue Speaks Global Booking Agency are ready to help you,  your companies, and organizations step into the future workplace!  Having the mindset of an entrepreneur while working for someone else is not the norm we are taught in our high schools, and universities.  Nor are the sought after skills when formulating your “Business Plan” either!  Contact me soon and let’s see how we can serve you!

Are you excited about the future workplace? I am! Being a “T-shaped” person is part of what it will take to move our country into our destiny of continued greatness!

Keeping it simple,

sue

What is Your Mind Focused On?

mindsetWhat is your mind focused on most of the time? That becomes your way of life, doesn’t it? Remember this saying when we first started going forward into the computer age “Garbage in- garbage out!” That’s how our minds work! What goes in is what we become and it shows itself everywhere we go!

That is why it is so important to make sure as individuals, business owners, and entrepreneurs we are putting the right things into our minds so that we can have successful and productive lives!

Once we begin on this journey it is a never ending process of learning and living. We have to recharge and refresh to keep our minds focused on what is best for us!

Whether it is improving our skill sets, maintaining great health, or having wonderful relationships and communications with others, it takes a daily decision and choice to keep our mindsets focused on doing what is best for us.

Carol Andrews, one of our speakers here at our agency is an expert in this field of making sure we create the right mindset for what we have been called and gifted to become.

As a sought after keynote speaker and break-out session presenter, Carol helps you know who you are so you can keep focused on what it will take to have confidence, overcome the fear, and succeed at what you do.

Having had a long career of being in front of the cameras as a TV Media Personality, Carol helps others to step out of their comfort zones and have a plan in place to succeed. Carol challenges everyone, including herself, to keep a positive attitude, be kind, and focus on the business you are in and do it well, using traditional and social media as your platform.

As a prolific author of her new best-seller, “From Author to Entrepreneur,” Carol has found a special niche workCarolbook1ing with other writers to tell their story and get it published. Just another interesting part of what Carol has to offer her audiences all over the world!

What is your mindset, as we move forward to finish 2015 strong?  Do you know the strength of your mind, and that the “best is yet to come?”

“yes….BUT!”

yesbutAs you live, work, and plan does the word BUT… ever come up?  Speakers and authors are cautioned not to overuse this word, but in reality how often is that your mindset?

Recently, Carol Andrews-TV Media Personality, and Speaker shared a new concept of how to evaluate, if you are living in the BUT mode, and staying where you are, by testing your EQR ability! It will help you get past the BUT… mentality and mindset and get you from where you are to where you want to be!

Is It Time to Be “Intentional?”

intentionalDo you know that 90% of Americans go to work when they are ill, even though they shouldn’t? Why is that? I have done my share to infect others, how about you?

But last week, it all caught up with me! Your past always does at some point in your life! I realized I had a choice, either accept I was ill and take care of myself; or continue to ignore the facts, and end up in worse shape! Funny part of all this is my husband, Carmen, also got the same stuff;  and so there was a total shutdown of life as we thought it was supposed to be!

What had happened? We had this all set to go! Plans were in place, goals were set, appointments and schedules were confirmed; how could we just make the choice to rest and reschedule and give into being ill, instead of keeping commitments to others and to ourselves?

For type A personalities it is a huge decision to admit you are not well enough to do what you have planned, and then not want to pick up something to put in place of the missing action!  I was proud of the fact that I am extremely healthy and have not had to face being ill many times in my life; but at this point I knew I was done and down. I had to do what was best for me, or face the possibility that none of what I was concerned about would even matter.

It has taken longer than I ever thought for us to recover, however, this has been one of the best listening and learning experiences of my life!  I had no choice but to experience and listen to what my physical, emotional, and spiritual self was telling me. Many of my friends, business associates, team members, and mentors encouraged me to make this a time of learning as well as healing. They could see things I didn’t want to face, and were urging me to do what I needed to do for me!

I am thankful now for their WOW ( words of wisdom) for I found there are 3 areas I need to have a clear understanding and plan before I kick into high gear again!   These are: (1)  Priorities- are they the right ones, and in the right order?  (2) Time Management-how wise am I managing it? (3)  Am I really clutter-free and enjoying my life- do my systems and processes allow me to do this?

Not a pretty site as I lay there doing my best to keep warm and the fever at bay! How was I able to get this transparent with myself and be able to share it with others?  I went back to one of my favorite pastimes- reading! My first choice is the scriptures and since we had already chosen a “Verse of the Year” I spent time thinking on these words:

“Those who wait upon God get fresh strength. They spread their wings and soar like eagles, they run and don’t get tired., they walk and don’t lag behind.” The Message-Isaiah 40:31.

I felt better already, knowing I was starting with the right priority for me!

I picked up two books that I had been wanting to get into, and took my time reading and listening to their words and thoughts. Just released by one of our speakers, Barbara Hemphill, entitled “Less Clutter More Life” www.lesscluttermorelife.com was what I needed to hear, and the ways to accomplish what I really wanted. Thanks, Barbara for that gift, it really helped me!

Then another book by one of my favorite people, Linda Apple, called “Writing Life” www.lindaapple.com/ showed me I had “let go” of some of my writing and blogging skills and that to be really be who I am, and do what I do, I needed to recapture them! Linda shares that our “stories matter” and she is a master teacher and motivational speaker sharing how to use your gifts and make them come alive on paper! Thanks, Linda for showing me the way back to enjoy reading and sharing “my story” with others once again!

We are now ready to launch into the New Year officially.  It will be a different beginning than we had originally planned! Our vision is still the same, but how we carry it out will be changing! We had chosen “Intentional” as our “Word of the Year” and how to make it key to the success and growth of our business and personal lives.  The speakers we represent here at “Simply” Sue Speaks! Global Booking Agency know how to bring the #WOWfactor experience to each of your events, and help you be the best you can be!  They also know how to help their “agent” make needed changes too!

I would never wish for you the illness we experienced to be the “wake up call” to motivate you to take a long hard look at your life; but take it from us that “the best is yet to come” for you when you are living with an intentional plan, purpose, and passion for it!  Isn’t it time?

Have a great “Intentional” week,
